The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has officially brought back its Students’ Union Government (SUG), ending a nearly decade-long suspension.
For the first time since 2016, student leaders have been elected to represent the student body for the 2025/2026 academic session.
Bolaji Akinpelu (Faculty of Arts) has emerged as the new SUG President, while Daniel Solomon (Faculty of Computing and Informatics) was elected as the General Secretary.
The election was held at Moremi Hall and involved faculty presidents voting to select the top union officials.
The union was dissolved in April 2016 following massive protests over poor electricity and water supply on campus.
Vice-Chancellor Folasade Ogunsola fulfilled her promise to restore the union to help students develop leadership skills and have a voice in university governance.
