Tragedy has struck the Obubra Local Government Area after a violent clash between security personnel and local youths resulted in multiple casualties.
On March 11, a dispute erupted between a miner and youths at a checkpoint located in a disputed territory between the Isabang and Alesi communities.
According to the Cross River State Police Command, the conflict began when a miner was allegedly attacked and robbed of his minerals, prompting him to seek help from nearby soldiers.
When the military arrived to arrest the suspects, they were met with stiff resistance from the community.
The situation quickly escalated, leading to a confrontation where four people were shot. While the police spokesperson, Eitokpah Sunday, confirmed that two civilians died and others were injured, there are also serious reports that two soldiers lost their lives during the chaos.
A high-level investigation ongoing aims to uncover the full circumstances of the deaths, while tactical teams have been sent to the area to ensure that normalcy returns to the affected villages.
