The founder of Encounter Jesus Ministry International, Apostle Michael Orokpo, recently opened up about a dark period in his life that almost ended his ministry.
In a candid interview, the Abuja cleric explained that the sudden death of his mother in 2010 was a massive blow to his spiritual commitments.
At the time, he was a passionate preacher, actively involved in church choreography and traveling between ministries.
However, seeing his mother—a woman he knew to be a devoted lifelong intercessor—die after a very brief illness left him feeling deeply betrayed and heartbroken.
This shattered faith led Orokpo into a year-long spiral from 2010 to 2011, where he deliberately tried to "pain God" by engaging in behaviors he once preached against.
He described this time as a "terrible year" where he fell into alcoholism and frequent clubbing, driven by a spirit of bitterness rather than peace.
He noted that despite his previous devotion, the pain of the loss made him want to walk away from his calling entirely.
However, his journey didn't end in that darkness. Through what he calls renewed encounters with the Holy Spirit, he eventually found the strength to recover and return to his priesthood.
The restoration was gradual, but it completely changed his perspective on service. Even after facing more grief and loss in 2017 when his brother passed away despite intense fasting, sowing seeds, and inviting other ministers to pray, Orokpo did not turn back to the world.
Instead, he learned that his true mission was to please God regardless of life’s painful circumstances, emerging with a resolve to do the will of God and get back at the devil through his ministry.
