The Nigerian Senate officially suspended its session on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, to pay its final respects to Senator Barinada Mpigi.
The lawmaker, who represented the Rivers South-East district, passed away on February 19 at the age of 64 following a long illness.
Following a motion by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, the lawmakers stopped all official business for the day to honor their late colleague.
The entire chamber stood for one minute of silence to recognize Mpigi's contributions to the country and his constituents.
Colleagues described the late Senator as a calm, approachable, and dedicated leader who was deeply committed to the people of Rivers State.
This suspension of "plenary" (the main meeting) is a long-standing tradition in the Nigerian legislature used to mourn members who die while in office.
