In preparation for the upcoming political season, President Bola Tinubu has officially directed all presidential political appointees who plan to run for office in the 2027 general elections to vacate their positions.
According to a circular issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the deadline for these resignations is strictly set for March 31, 2026.
This directive is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, which ensures that public officials do not use their current offices to gain an unfair advantage during party primaries.
The order affects a wide range of high-ranking officials, including Honourable Ministers, Special Advisers, and Directors-General of federal agencies.
By requiring these individuals to submit their formal resignation letters through the OSGF, the administration aims to follow the INEC timetable for the selection of candidates.
This move is designed to maintain the integrity of the forthcoming party primaries, ensuring that those seeking a nomination for elective office are fully separated from the resources and influence of the federal government before they begin their campaigns.
