Nigeria is facing a massive electricity crisis as gas suppliers threaten to cut off fuel to power plants. The Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC) warned that unless the government settles a ₦3.3 trillion debt, the country could be plunged into total darkness.
Currently, the national grid is struggling, producing only 3,334 megawatts—far below what the nation needs.
Gas companies say they won't put "gas in the pipe" unless they are paid. The total debt owed to power companies has now hit a staggering ₦6.8 trillion.
Most of Nigeria's electricity comes from "thermal plants" that run on gas. No gas means no power.
With the grid failing, Nigerians are forced to use generators. However, with petrol over ₦1,100 and diesel at ₦1,600, running a home or business has become incredibly expensive.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, says the government is working with petroleum officials to find a solution and stop the looming shutdown.
