The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, has sent a shockwave through the force by declaring that the era of shielding erring officers is officially over.
During a high-stakes press briefing in Ikeja, the CP made it clear that the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, popularly known as the Task Force, is currently on probation.
Jimoh warned that if human rights violations and professional negligence continue, he will not hesitate to disband the entire unit and start from scratch.
This stern warning follows a wave of public outcry and a viral video allegedly showing operatives interfering in a land dispute and arresting lawyers.
The Commissioner emphasized that the police command will no longer provide a legal cover for those who tarnish the reputation of the force through unprofessional conduct.
He noted that the primary duty of the police is to protect residents, not to engage in extortion or meddle in civil matters that fall outside their jurisdiction.
To ensure transparency, the command is now inviting civil society organisations to help monitor the unit and hold every officer accountable for their actions on the field.
