The current Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, has officially taken over the criminal case against the man who held the job before him, Abubakar Malami.
The case involves serious allegations of terrorism and illegal possession of weapons.
On Wednesday, the government’s legal team told the court that the trial couldn't start yet. Because the case was just handed over to the new Attorney-General, he needs more time to study the files.
Malami and his son, Abdulaziz, are facing five charges. These include failing to prosecute known terrorism sponsors while he was in office and keeping a firearm and ammunition at their home without a license.
Malami’s lawyers are unhappy with the delay. they asked the judge to throw out the case if the government isn't ready to start soon, but the judge decided to give the new team a few more days.
Both men are currently out on ₦200 million bail. To stay out of custody, they had to surrender their passports and find wealthy supporters who own property in expensive areas of Abuja like Maitama or Asokoro.
