In a major win for public safety, the police have successfully arrested 15 people linked to the violent attacks on women during an annual traditional event in Ozoro, Delta State.
For years, reports have suggested that this particular community festival held every March enforced a "stay-at-home" rule for ladies, where those found outdoors were subjected to forced molestation.
However, the recent disturbing videos shared on social media brought the world’s attention to the physical assaults happening on the streets.
The law enforcement agencies moved swiftly after the Delta State Commissioner of Police ordered an immediate intervention.
Chief Omorede Sunday, a prominent leader in the Oramudu quarters, was arrested alongside other suspected perpetrators for his alleged role in coordinating the event.
Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed that these suspects are no longer being held locally but have been moved to the State CID for specialized questioning.
The criminal investigation is looking into the specific incidents that occurred on Thursday, March 19, where many victims were sexually harassed and shamed in public.
By highlighting the 15 suspects now in a police cell, the authorities are sending a clear message: tradition is never an excuse for sexual violence.
The Nigeria Police Force continues to urge witnesses to come forward as they work toward safeguarding lives and ensuring that justice will be served for every woman harmed during the chaotic event.
