A viral video from the Rivers State House of Assembly has sparked intense debate after a commissioner nominee, Charity Deemua, admitted she had not paid taxes since 2018.

During her screening on Monday, March 9, 2026, she told lawmakers that her "job" as a politician did not provide a taxable income.

Speaker Martin Amaewhule pointed out that Deemua’s tax records were nearly eight years out of date, asking if she was "exempted" from paying.

Deemua claimed she had no steady work since 2018, stating, "I'm a politician, I don't have work."

When pressed, she admitted she was paid for serving on a local government caretaker committee in 2025. The Speaker noted that this was indeed income that should have been taxed.

Following the exchange, the House rejected her nomination, alongside three others, citing poor performance and lack of tax compliance.
