The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially confirmed that the Shawwal moon was not sighted across the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Wednesday.
Consequently, the Sultanate Council has declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the official day for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
This decision was reached after the National Moon Sighting Committee and the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs reported that no credible evidence of the new crescent was found on the 29th day of the month.
In accordance with Islamic lunar calendar traditions, Muslims nationwide are expected to observe the 30th day of Ramadan on Thursday, March 19.
The President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs accepted the technical reports, ensuring that the fast is completed in full.
This announcement ensures that the Muslim faithful can prepare for the festivities with clarity, following the established religious protocols that govern the end of the fasting period.
