The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially handed over ₦279 million in recovered funds to the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts (formerly the National Theatre).
The money was recovered following a long-standing investigation into a fraudulent 2009 contract involving gate construction and sand filling at the Lagos landmark.
Investigations revealed that a contractor was overpaid by millions but only completed work worth a fraction of the total contract value.
The EFCC successfully recovered the ₦279 million during the court trial of the suspects involved.
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede warned the Centre's management that the agency will be watching "with eagle eyes" to ensure the money is spent exactly as intended.
The Centre has pledged to use the funds for the benefit of Nigeria’s creative industry and the maintenance of the newly renovated facility.
