The Department of State Services (DSS) has begun questioning top management at the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) following a strange break-in at the agency's Finance Department.

While the council claims it is a standard security investigation, some staff allege the incident is being used to target "enemies" of the current CEO, Nonye Ayeni.

Between January 23 and 26, 2026, the NEPC headquarters in Maitama was allegedly burgled despite 24-hour protection by Police and Civil Defence officers.

Senior directors and deputy directors have been summoned to the DSS office for questioning over the last two weeks.

While early reports suggested nothing was taken, the council’s spokesperson later confirmed that one laptop was stolen and several files were tampered with.

Some employees believe the burglary was "staged" to provide an excuse for the DSS to monitor staff phones and find out who has been leaking information to the media.
