The Deputy Spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has downplayed the recent walkout by opposition members, calling it a "globally recognized" way for lawmakers to show they disagree with a decision.
He assured Nigerians that the protest is not a sign of trouble but a healthy part of democracy.
Opposition lawmakers walked out of the chamber on Tuesday after losing a vote on Clause 60(3) of the new Electoral Bill.
The opposition wanted electronic result transmission to be compulsory with no exceptions. However, the House voted to keep a "manual backup" in case the internet or network fails.
Agbese explained that these actions happen in parliaments all over the world. It is a way for the minority to voice their firm opposition without breaking the law or stopping the work of the government.
Despite the shouting and the walkout, Agbese insists the House remains committed to making sure the 2027 elections are transparent and fair for everyone.
