The families of 16 detained military officers accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu are appealing for mercy.
The officers, who have been in detention since October 2025, are awaiting court-martial after being found guilty of the offence.
A family member of one of the Majors expressed their desperation, saying they're exploring all options, including political solutions, to resolve the issue. "We know the offence is serious, but these are our loved ones, breadwinners for their families. We appeal to President Tinubu to temper justice with mercy," they said.
Another family member, speaking anonymously, expressed shock at the coup plot allegations, saying they initially thought the detention was unjust. "Dear president, forgive our sons; dear Nigerians, forgive them. Their children are still young, please forgive us," they pleaded.
