Top Police Chiefs Lobby Tinubu to Keep Jobs as New IGP Takes Over

There is currently a high-stakes "tug-of-war" within the Nigeria Police Force as senior officers (DIGs) fight to keep their positions under the new Inspector-General, Tunji Disu

While some want the President to clear out the old leaders, others are lobbying hard to stay.

A group of senior Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) is arguing that they should not be fired because the new IGP, Disu, is technically close to retirement age. They believe a total cleanup is unnecessary right now.

Reports suggest that APC leader Bisi Akande is pushing for DIG Adegoke Fayoade to stay in office. The goal is allegedly to position Fayoade as the next person to lead the police after Disu.

Although there was a plan to retire about 30 top officers to give the new IGP a fresh start, President Tinubu has reportedly paused that move. He believes Disu needs the experience of the older officers for now.

Even though Disu was supposed to retire in April 2026, the law now allows an IGP to stay for a fixed four-year term. This has created confusion and rivalry among those hoping to take his place.
