Shake-up in Nigeria Police: 8 Senior DIGs Retire as New Leaders Step Up

In a major restructuring of the Nigeria Police Force, eight high-ranking Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) have officially stepped down.

This move follows the appointment of Tunji Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on March 6, 2026.

While many of these officers are following the "regimented tradition" of retiring when a junior is promoted over them, some are reportedly considering legal action to challenge the process.

Those leaving the force include the well-known former spokesperson Frank Mba, along with DIGs Sadiq Idris Abubakar, Bzigu Yakubu Kwazi, and five others.

Sources suggest that some retired officers are reviewing whether their exit followed due process and the Police Act 2020, especially regarding mandatory retirement ages and service years.

To fill the gaps, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has already promoted seven Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs) to the rank of DIG.

The newly promoted leaders, including Margaret Agebe Ochalla and Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, are expected to be decorated at the Force Headquarters this coming Monday.
