The legal team representing former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has demanded his immediate release from the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC)

In a strongly-worded letter dated March 6, 2026, lawyer Ubong Akpan accused the agency of "false imprisonment" and warned of a ₦2 billion lawsuit.

The lawyer claims El-Rufai has been held for 15 days without being formally charged in a proper court, calling the situation an "absolute disgrace."

Akpan accused the ICPC of "forum shopping"—taking a money laundering case to a Magistrate Court that doesn't have the power (jurisdiction) to handle such serious crimes.

The ICPC allegedly promised to charge the former governor within 14 days but instead went back to court to ask for more time to keep him in a cell.

El-Rufai’s team is demanding a public apology in three national newspapers and ₦2 billion in damages for the violation of his fundamental human rights.
