Family members of Nigerian military officers accused of a coup plot have held a tearful press briefing in Abuja, begging President Bola Tinubu to intervene.

The group, supported by human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju and activist Omoyele Sowore, revealed that over 100 people have been held for five months without trial or any contact with their families.

Wives of the detained officers stated they have not seen or spoken to their husbands in over 160 days. Some families have even lost parents during this time, but the detained men are unaware of the deaths.

Activist Omoyele Sowore highlighted the case of a two-month-old baby present at the briefing who has never met his father because the officer was arrested before the child was born.

The families are asking for a simple constitutional right: either release the men or charge them in an open court. They argue that secret detentions violate the Nigerian Constitution.

The families pointed out inconsistencies in the government's story, noting that initial claims of ₦12 billion being found have reportedly dropped to ₦835 million in a company account.
