The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council of the organized labor movement has officially proposed a new minimum wage of ₦154,000 for public workers across the country.

This bold demand represents a 120 per cent increase in basic pay and salaries and allowances, a move the council argues is necessary to survive the current economic realities

In a formal letter addressed to the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, labor leaders highlighted that the current value of workers’ earnings has plummeted, leaving many families in a state of extreme hardship.

While the group expressed gratitude for the recent approval of gratuity payments, they insisted that a full salary review is the only way to address the steady rise in the cost of living

With rising inflation, expensive fuel prices, and high transport fares draining the pockets of civil servants, the council believes that the government must act quickly.

The meeting held at the AUPCTRE National Secretariat in Abuja concluded that without this adjustment, workers will continue to struggle to afford basic necessities like food, housing, healthcare, and education, which are vital for a productive workforce.
