In a major victory for the Nigeria national security forces, troops of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully eliminated Bako Gorgore, a high-ranking leader of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The news was confirmed by counter-insurgency experts after security agencies intercepted internal messages from the terrorists mourning their fallen leader.
Gorgore, also known as Abou Mustapha, was a veteran fighter who played a key role in the leadership structure of the insurgent group, serving on their highest decision-making council.
Gorgore's history is deeply tied to the rise of terrorism in the Lake Chad region. Most notably, he was one of the masterminds behind the 2021 attack that led to the death of Abubakar Shekau, the former leader of Boko Haram.
Experts believe his removal will cause a significant command continuity crisis within the group, as he possessed decades of operational experience.
By neutralizing such a senior figure, the military has successfully weakened the insurgent network, potentially triggering internal power struggles among younger commanders who lack his "institutional memory."
