Nigeria's maritime security has achieved a significant milestone as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency moves to prosecute a group of foreign nationals involved in a high-stakes drug trafficking case.

The 10 Filipinos were arrested aboard the MV Nord Bosporus after authorities discovered 20kg of a narcotic drug hidden within the ship.

This security incident at the Apapa port highlights the ongoing struggle against global cartels using commercial vessels to move contraband.

The foreigners are accused of violating the NDLEA Act, which carries heavy penalties for the unlawful importation of dangerous substances.

Despite the crew's initial "not guilty" plea in the Federal High Court, their legal team, led by Femi Atoyebi (SAN), confirmed that a plea bargain agreement is currently on the table.

This move is aimed at facilitating a swifter resolution to the case, which has drawn international attention to the vulnerabilities of the Apapa port logistics chain.

As the ongoing investigations conclude, the court will decide the fate of the sailors and the vessel.

This case serves as a stern warning to international shipping lines that Nigerian authorities are actively monitoring all cargo for signs of cocaine smuggling and other criminal activities.
