In a significant political move, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially demanded the release of Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State.
This call for justice came shortly after Atiku returned to Nigeria from Saudi Arabia, where he participated in the Umrah (lesser Hajj).
Upon his arrival, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain led a high-level delegation to visit Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney General of the Federation, to show solidarity during Malami's ongoing legal challenges.
Atiku used the occasion to address the current administration, insisting that political detainees should not be held simply for having a different ideology or belonging to an opposing political platform.
He argued that the detention of figures like Mallam Nasir El-Rufai appears to be a suppression of dissent.
While Atiku pushes for these releases, the host of the visit, Malami, remains entangled in a Federal High Court case in Abuja.
The former minister is currently battling serious allegations, including terrorism financing and a multi-billion naira money laundering case, which continues to draw national attention.
