The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai will remain in their custody as they dig deeper into his eight-year administration.
Investigators are reportedly seeking a court order to keep him beyond the standard 48 hours to deal with a mountain of evidence.
Sources say El-Rufai was questioned for hours, specifically to respond to statements made by his former Commissioner of Finance. He has been asked to review a large volume of documents.
The EFCC insists there is "no cause for alarm," as El-Rufai has full access to his lawyers and is being treated professionally.
Once the EFCC is done, the ICPC is waiting to question him over a failed ₦1.3 billion light rail project in Kaduna.
The secret police (DSS) are also prepared to take him into their custody to face charges in court for allegedly tapping the phone of the National Security Adviser.
