Total Blackout Looms as Power Workers Give 21-Day Warning

Nigeria might be facing a complete shutdown of electricity across the country very soon. The people who make our electricity work—the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE)—have officially told the government they will stop working if their long-standing problems aren't fixed within 21 days.

Why are they angry? The workers say that for 12 years, the government and private power companies have ignored their complaints. Despite the fact that electricity bills (tariffs) keep going up, the workers claim:

  • No Pay Raises: They haven't received salary increments or the new 2025 Minimum Wage.

  • Bad Working Conditions: They aren't getting promoted or receiving bonuses.

  • Safety Concerns: When customers get angry about high bills, they often take their frustration out on the field workers, yet the companies do not protect them.

The Bottom Line: If the government doesn't meet their demands by the end of this 21-day notice (which started on January 26), the workers plan to stop the machines that generate and distribute power, leaving the entire nation in the dark.
