President Bola Tinubu officially decorated Tunji Disu with his new rank as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) during a ceremony at the State House on Wednesday.
The event was attended by top government officials, including the National Security Adviser and the outgoing police boss, Kayode Egbetokun.
During the ceremony, President Tinubu praised the former IGP, Egbetokun, for his service. While Egbetokun officially resigned for "family reasons," insiders suggest the change was part of a planned leadership refresh by the President.
Although Disu is close to the usual retirement age of 60, new police laws allow him to serve a full four-year term. This means he could lead the police force until 2030.
Disu is well-known for his time leading the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, where he nicknamed his officers "The Good Guys." He is also a champion in Judo, having won a silver medal at a major U.S. championship.
Because Disu has been promoted, many senior officers who were above him in rank are now expected to retire. Reports suggest that between 15 and 20 top police chiefs may leave the force to make room for the new leadership.
