The Presidency has officially confirmed that Kayode Egbetokun has stepped down from his role as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Egbetokun submitted his resignation on Monday, citing "pressing family matters" that require his full attention.
The government maintains that Egbetokun chose to leave to focus on personal family issues. However, insiders note that this happened immediately after a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Tunji Disu has been appointed as the Acting IGP with immediate effect. Disu, who previously led a top investigation unit in Lagos, is known for his experience in crime-fighting and intelligence.
Egbetokun took office in June 2023. His departure comes during a period of planned restructuring within the police force to better handle national security challenges.
Along with the change at the top, reports suggest that a major shake-up is coming, with nearly 30 other senior police chiefs expected to be retired or reassigned as part of the new leadership's plan.
