NAFDAC is standing its ground regarding the regulation of sachet alcohol and small PET bottles.
On Wednesday, the agency officially cleared the air, stating that its enforcement teams are still active and that the proposed ban has not been suspended.
Why the Controversy? The debate over sachet alcohol has two sides:
Health Concerns: Regulators like NAFDAC worry that small, cheap sachets make it too easy for underage kids to get drunk and for adults to abuse alcohol.
Economic Concerns: Manufacturers and workers in the drink industry have asked for more time, fearing that a sudden ban will lead to job losses.
The Agency's Warning: Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye urged Nigerians and business owners to stop listening to unverified news. She warned that spreading "fake news" about government policies creates confusion in the economy and makes people anxious for no reason.
For now, the rules stay the same: NAFDAC will continue to enforce the law and protect public health until they are told otherwise through a formal government document.
