The House of Representatives has set up a special seven-person team to investigate a major problem in the power sector: Why is gas being supplied to power plants that aren't actually producing electricity? This move is part of a larger look into how money has been spent on Nigeria's power grid since 2006.
The Main Concern: A lawmaker, Harrison Nwadike, pointed out a strange situation at the Sapele Power Plant in Delta State. He claimed that for over a year, the plant has been receiving gas—which is like the "fuel" for the plant—even though it hasn't actually generated any power for the country.
The Company's Defense: The gas supplier, Seplat Energy, denied doing anything wrong. They explained that:
They are fully committed to helping Nigeria's power sector.
The Sapele plant actually owes them ₦20 billion for gas they have already provided.
The Investigation: Lawmakers aren't convinced yet. They worry that gas meant for electricity might be getting diverted or misused.
The new committee, led by Afam Victor Ogene, will now perform a "forensic audit"—a deep, expert check of the records—to find out where all that gas really went.
