The ancient town of Ijebu-Ode stood still on Friday for the funeral of Lucia Onabanjo, the widow of Ogun State’s first civilian governor.
The ceremony, held at the St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral, celebrated a century of a life well-lived.
Mama Lucia passed away on January 11, 2026, just after hitting the 100-year milestone.
Governor Abiodun attended the funeral mass, calling her a "steady support" for her family and a woman whose impact was felt through the lives of the people she mentored.
During the event, the Governor assured the church that the state would take over the completion of their ongoing cathedral project in her honor.
Her late husband governed Ogun State from 1979 to 1983.
Throughout his career and the political struggles that followed, Lucia was known as his most loyal companion.
