This meeting followed the governors' declaration that the presidency should shift to the South.
Gambari, who was present at the meeting, shared on Channels Television's Politics Today that the governors sought clarity on Buhari's stance, given his leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). "They wanted to know if he had already chosen a preferred candidate," Gambari explained.
According to Gambari, Buhari's response was clear: "I do not have an anointed candidate for president to be a successor." Gambari advised Buhari to convey this message directly to the governors, which he did.
Gambari emphasized that Buhari didn't believe in imposing or anointing a successor. When asked about allegations that Buhari privately encouraged some aspirants, Gambari said he couldn't speak to private conversations but maintained that Buhari's official position was unambiguous.
The 2023 presidential election saw Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerge victorious, defeating Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.
