A former Chinese Justice Minister, Tang Yijun, has received a life sentence for accepting bribes worth nearly $20 million over 16 years.

The Xiamen Intermediate People's Court found Tang, 64, guilty of abusing his power as Justice Minister (2020-2023), Governor of Liaoning Province, and Communist Party secretary of Ningbo city.

Tang exploited his positions to help individuals and companies secure deals, loans, and land, receiving 137 million yuan ($19.7 million) in bribes.

The court deemed the amount "particularly high" and damaging to state interests.

However, Tang showed remorse, confessed, and cooperated with investigators, earning him leniency.

His conviction is part of President Xi Jinping's ongoing anti-corruption campaign, which has targeted several high-profile officials since 2012.

Critics argue the crackdown also eliminates potential rivals. Recent targets include another former Justice Minister, Fu Zhenghua, and General Zhang Youxia, a top military figure.
