Nigerian security agencies say they have wrapped up investigations into an alleged plan to topple President Bola Tinubu’s government. The probe uncovered 40 suspects drawn from the military, police, and civilian circles.

According to reports, those involved allegedly played roles in reconnaissance, propaganda, and funding operations. The State Security Service (SSS) has already detained 13 individuals, including two military officers (one retired), a police officer, and 10 civilians.

  • 16 military officers were accused of direct involvement.

  • 2 civilians allegedly handled reconnaissance.

  • 2 others were linked to inciting civil unrest.

  • 5 suspects were tied to funding channels.

One soldier briefly escaped custody but was later rearrested in Bauchi.

Military Response

The Defence Headquarters confirmed the investigation is complete and has been forwarded to higher authorities. Officials described the alleged plot as a betrayal of military ethics and professionalism.

At least 25 officers are expected to face trial, while several civilians remain under investigation by the EFCC and SSS for financing and logistics support.

How the Plot Unfolded

Investigators revealed the plan first emerged during the transition from Muhammadu Buhari to Tinubu in May 2023 but collapsed due to lack of funds. It was revived in 2025 after former Bayelsa Governor Timipre Sylva allegedly moved nearly ₦1 billion through Bureau De Change accounts.

Retired Major General Adamu, Sylva, and three others remain at large. One suspect has reportedly fled to South America.

Targets and Strategy

Sources claim the plotters planned assassinations of President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. They also allegedly intended to seize key sites including:

Informants inside the Villa were said to be tracking officials’ movements.
