The reported removal of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun is expected to trigger a massive wave of retirements at the top of the Nigeria Police Force.

Sources suggest that at least 29 high-ranking officers—including Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) and Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs)—are likely to be cleared out to make way for new leadership.

The planned removal of these 29 senior officials is seen as a way to restructure the police force under the incoming boss, Tunji Disu.

Insiders claim Egbetokun was recently told by President Tinubu to prepare his handover notes. This follows a period of heavy criticism regarding his leadership and health.

While the official announcement is still pending, there are reports of celebration within some sections of the police force, as many felt the previous leadership style was too controversial.

Much of the tension stemmed from Egbetokun staying in office past the usual retirement age, a move that critics say caused frustration among other senior officers waiting for promotion.
