Oyo State's 50th anniversary celebrations kicked off without two of its top monarchs, Alaafin of Oyo and Soun of Ogbomoso, amidst controversy over the state's traditional council leadership.

Governor Seyi Makinde hosted the event at the University of Ibadan, where he cut the golden jubilee cake and highlighted his administration's focus on economic growth and development.

The absence of the monarchs follows a recent row over Makinde's decision to introduce a rotational leadership structure for the Oyo State Council of Obas, previously led permanently by the Alaafin.

The Alaafin had disputed Makinde's claim that he backed the new arrangement.

Despite the snub, the event proceeded with tributes to former leaders and a digital platform showcasing residents' stories of resilience and enterprise.

Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, urged the government to honour unsung heroes who shaped the state's development.
