The Court of Appeal in Ilorin, Kwara State, has upheld the death sentences of five men convicted over the 2018 Offa bank robbery

The appellate court dismissed their appeals, stating they lacked merit, and ordered their return to prison custody.

The convicts, Ayoade Akinnibosun, Azeez Salahudeen, Niyi Ogundiran, Ibikunle Ogunleye, and Adeola Abraham, were found guilty of armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms, and culpable homicide.

The robbery, which occurred in April 2018, resulted in the deaths of at least 32 people, including nine police officers.

Justice Haleemah Salman of the Kwara State High Court initially sentenced the five men to death by hanging in September 2024, after a six-year trial.

The defence team plans to appeal the decision at the Supreme Court. Lead prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), praised the appellate court's decision, calling it thorough and well-considered.
