16 military officers accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu are facing the death penalty or imprisonment under Nigeria's military law.

The officers, detained since October 2025, were found guilty by a probe panel, and their case has been submitted to the president.

Retired generals say the Armed Forces Act prescribes death penalty for attempted coup, but President Tinubu can choose to show mercy. "The normal thing is death penalty to serve as a deterrence to others," said Gen. Bashir Adewinbi (Rtd). "But the President can use his prerogative to decide the punishment."

The coup attempt has sparked calls for severe punishment to curb insecurity and terrorism in Nigeria. Would you like updates on the trial or Nigeria's security situation? 😊
