Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has ignited controversy by drawing parallels between President Bola Tinubu's administration and Cameroon's authoritarian leader, Paul Biya. El-Rufai cautioned that if Nigerians fail to unite and vote Tinubu out in 2027, he may attempt to cling to power, mirroring Biya's decades-long rule in Cameroon.

El-Rufai made these remarks while hosting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who visited him to express solidarity after an alleged attack by "APC-sponsored thugs" during the African Democratic Congress (ADC) inauguration in Kaduna. He slammed Tinubu's government as a "disgrace to democratic ideals," accusing it of centralizing power rather than promoting federalism.

Atiku praised El-Rufai's bravery and urged opposition leaders to stay focused on holding the Tinubu administration accountable through democratic means. El-Rufai highlighted Atiku's experience in opposition politics, stating that Nigerians are relying on his leadership to mobilize resistance against Tinubu's government
