Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reflected on the massive pressure he faced when he took office in 1999.

Speaking at an international event in Abeokuta to mark his 89th birthday, the elder statesman noted that after years of military rule, many Nigerians didn't just want a president—they wanted someone who could perform miracles.

Obasanjo explained that because the country had suffered through economic decay and dictatorship, people expected an overnight transformation that was simply impossible.

He described leadership as the "burden" of carrying other people’s hopes, which are often much larger than any one human being can actually satisfy.

Despite being surrounded by advisers and generals, Obasanjo spoke about the "loneliness of the final decision," where the leader alone must make choices that affect millions of lives.

He noted the frustration of being "elevated by hope but measured by time," meaning people wanted results much faster than the government could deliver them.
