In a historic and highly debated move, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially updated its records to name Morocco as the winners of the 2025 AFCON.
This decision comes after a massive legal reversal regarding the final match played in Rabat. While Senegal initially celebrated a 1-0 victory on the pitch thanks to a goal by Pape Gueye, the CAF Appeals Board has now nullified that result.
The shift stems from a controversial penalty awarded during stoppage time, which led to a protest by the Senegalese players that ultimately cost them the title.
According to the official statement, the governing body invoked Article 84 of the AFCON Regulations.
Because the Senegalese team briefly walked off the pitch, CAF ruled that they had forfeited the final match.
As a result, the scoreline has been administratively reset to a 3-0 victory for the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football.
This ruling gives the Atlas Lions their second continental title.
Despite the backlash from fans and analysts who believe the outcome decided on the pitch should stand, CAF President Patrice Motsepe has defended the move, stating that adherence to regulations is the only way to ensure the integrity of the competition.
