The town of Argungu in Kebbi State was packed with energy on Saturday as the famous International Fishing Festival officially kicked off.
However, the event started with an unexpected twist when thousands of eager fishermen jumped into the river before the official signal was even given!
Over 40,000 fishermen were registered for the event. In their excitement, a large group dived into the water around noon, ahead of the planned schedule and the arrival of President Bola Tinubu.
Spectators who arrived as early as 7:00 am watched as men with traditional nets and gourds raced into the river in a massive display of speed and strength.
Security teams were briefly overwhelmed by the huge crowd but managed to restore order after about 30 minutes so the official ceremony could continue.
This festival, which started in 1934 to celebrate peace, has now become a world-famous event featuring wrestling, music, dance, and local arts.
