A suspected bomb was unearthed at the United Evangelical Church in Ehere/Umuola, Ogbor Hill, Aba, Abia State, sparking panic among locals.
The incident occurred while church members were digging around the parsonage to build a new fence, as the area is being prepared for a road expansion project.
Eyewitnesses reveal that a group of church members discovered the metal object, initially unaware of its potential danger.
However, the priest in charge quickly suspected it was a bomb and alerted others, preventing a potential disaster. Soldiers were called in to evacuate the object, and the area was secured.
"It's a blessing it didn't explode," said an eyewitness. "The area is always bustling with traders and passersby. Over 100 lives could have been lost, not to mention property damage."
Rev Thompson Ikpeoha, Secretary of the Aba Area Conference of the United Evangelical Church, confirmed the incident but was awaiting further details from the priest in charge.
A senior military officer also confirmed the incident, stating that the Army headquarters has taken over the investigation.
The community is breathing a sigh of relief, grateful for the narrow escape.
