The Budget Office of the Federation is pushing back against allegations that Nigeria's newly enacted Tax Reform Acts were altered after passage.

In a statement, Director-General Tanimu Yakubu emphasized that the sanctity of the law is fundamental to constitutional democracy.

The controversy arose after the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives raised concerns.

The Budget Office warned that governance by speculation undermines trust and clarity in fiscal laws. "A nation cannot be governed by insinuation or sustained on circulating documents of uncertain origin," the statement said.

The office welcomed the National Assembly's decision to investigate, stressing that institutional inquiry is the way forward. They also highlighted the importance of legal certainty for revenue projections, macroeconomic stability, and investor confidence.

To address concerns, the Budget Office proposed:

- Publishing verified reference texts

- Providing Certified True Copies

- Clear public explanations for discrepancies

- Strict alignment of regulations with authenticated laws

The office urged caution, saying properly implemented tax reform can reduce dependence on borrowing and ease burdens on vulnerable citizens
