Fela Kuti, the legendary Nigerian musician and Afrobeat pioneer, has been posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, 29 years after his death.

The Recording Academy cited his enduring influence on global music, culture, and political expression.

Fela's son, Seun Kuti, called the honour "emotional and symbolic", saying it's a "double victory" and brings balance to Fela's story.

The award comes as African music gains global recognition, with the Grammys introducing a Best African Performance category in 2024.

Fela joins music legends like Bing Crosby, Carlos Santana, and Paul Simon as a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. His family and associates will attend the Grammy ceremony to accept the award.
